Dawkins in Danger, Colvin Cleans Up Primary Opponents

City Councilman Johnny Dawkins is in real danger of losing his seat next month. The son of a long-time Mayor, Johnny has repeatedly won his Republican-heavy district despite facing some solid challengers. This time, I think he’s finally met his match.

You may have seen Lynne Greene’s signs around town, memoji included. While November’s general election will have a much higher turnout, Greene has proven that she has the chops to take on a political blue-blood.

This race is going to get heated in the next few months. Dawkins has been accused of spending a great deal of time (even living) outside of Fayetteville, and Greene was quick to hammer this point in an interview with the Fayetteville Observer:

“I think people are concerned about having better representation,” Greene said. “They’re not satisfied that … he’s working for the district. And, you know, there’s all the question about where he lives, and him spending his time full-time here, and I think that that’s been a big concern of everybody.

Dawkins will have to fire back in a way that doesn’t further alienate his voters. It’s a tough task in the current environment. He can’t simply run as a “conservative” and win anymore. I could be wrong, but the momentum has shifted, and I think we’re looking at the end of the Dawkins dynasty in Fayetteville politics.

Colvin Skates

Speaking of dynasties, Mitch Colvin cleaned up in the mayor’s race without much campaigning. He destroyed Charles Evans, a local political heavyweight, and he’ll make short work of Freddie Delacruz in the general election in November.

Like it or not, Colvin will be our Mayor for another term.
